NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Houston man who was convicted of robbing a downtown New Orleans bank at gunpoint has been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison.
A federal judge on Wednesday sentenced 58-year-old Abdel Rahim Muhammad to 162 months in prison and ordered him to pay restitution to Whitney Bank.
Prosecutors say Muhammad brandished a gun when he entered the bank on July 21, 2009, disarmed a security guard and pointed his gun at a teller while demanding cash.
A jury convicted Muhammad in November of armed bank robbery and of conspiring to launder the stolen money.
Prosecutors say Muhammad was previously convicted of aggravated rape in New Orleans in 1980 and of two counts of armed bank robbery in Georgia in 2002.
