BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in the 2007 killing and robbery of a Folsom-area man at a Baton Rouge motel.
Michael Gillam was charged with second-degree murder, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter in May to the Sept. 8, 2007, shooting death of John Morgan.
Family members of the victim on Thursday called the killing a "senseless act" that changed their lives forever, and asked state District Judge Tony Marabella to impose the maximum sentence.
Manslaughter could result in a sentence of 40 years in prison, but Gillam's plea agreement called for a sentencing range of 10 to 20 years.
Marabella said Gillam claimed he was on a crack cocaine binge at the time of the crime.
