BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) A judge has found a 23-year-old man guilty of manslaughter in the 2007 stabbing death of his 17-year-old girlfriend at her Baton Rouge apartment.
The Advocate reports that prosecutors had asked state District Judge Bonnie Jackson to find Alexander Hooks guilty of second-degree murder, which carries a mandatory penalty of life in prison.
Manslaughter carries a sentence of up to 40 years in prison. Jackson said she will sentence Hooks on June 28.
Jackson, who found Hooks did not have the specific intent to kill Bionca Brown, ruled instead the killing was committed in sudden passion or heat of blood.
Jackson also said Hooks called members of his and Brown's family immediately after the killing, and left a note at the scene apologizing for what he had done.
