AMITE, La. (AP) - A 27-year-old Loranger man accused of second-degree murder in his wife's death in July has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
The Daily Star reports Richard LaGarrigue entered his plea Wednesday.
He will next face mental evaluations by two doctors to determine if he is mentally competent to stand trial. His next court date is Nov. 6, when the doctors will present their findings to Judge Elizabeth Wolfe.
A Tangipahoa Parish grand jury indicted LaGarrigue earlier this month.
LaGarrigue was arrested in St. Martin Parish on July 24 after being pulled over on Interstate 10. He was then booked with second-degree murder in the death of his wife, 28-year-old Heather LaGarrigue, at their Loranger home.
Investigators believe Richard LaGarrigue shot his wife in the chest following an argument.
