JENNINGS, La. (AP) - Officials say a house fire in Jennings has claimed the life of a handicapped man.
State Fire Marshall Butch Browning said the fire occurred at 11:30 p.m. Monday.
The American Press reports the body of 55-year-old Kenneth Ray Riggs was discovered inside the home.
Officials say Riggs' mother, Marguerite "Maggie" Riggs, and his brother-in-law, Leon, escaped from the home.
Family members told the newspaper that Leon tried to get the victim, who was in a wheelchair, out of the burning home but was overcome by the flame and smokes in a hallway.
Kenneth Riggs was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson Davis Parish Coroner's Office.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
