Man cited for crash that killed 13-year-old girl

The man accused of causing a crash on I-10 that killed 13-year-old Abigail Vasquez is charged with careless operation. Trey Duplechien, 37, drove his truck across the median just west of University Ave. and crashed into a vehicle in which Vasquez was riding on May 1, according to Lafayette police.

Vasquez's father and younger brother were in the vehicle. The boy had minor injuries, and the father and Duplechien were seriously injured. The father, Johnny, is still in the hospital and is responding to voices. Vasquez's mother, Ivette, who was pregnant but not in the crash, has since given birth to a healthy baby. Duplechien's condition is unknown.

Lafayette Police Dept. Public Information Officer Paul Mouton says the crash is still under investigation and more charges are possible.
