Man charged with looting burned home in Eunice

A Eunice man is accused of trying to steal copper wire from a house that caught fire in the 100 block of Aymond Street around 5:30 Christmas Eve morning. An officer caught 57-year-old Curley Pitre Sr. in the act, according to Eunice Deputy Chief Varden Guillory.

After battling the morning blaze, firefighters cordoned off the home. A neighbor called police around 4:20 that afternoon after witnessing Pitre cross the yellow tape and enter the house, Guillory said. "The officer observed Pitre with wire cutters in hand and several bundles of copper wire. The officer verified that Pitre did not have permission to be on the property."

According to police, Pitre admitted to stripping wire from the house for extra cash. Pitre is charged with looting.

On the morning of December 24, 2012 at 5:35am a 911 caller reported a house fire in the 100 block of Aymond Street. The fire department responded and was on scene until 8am. The house had heavy damage from the fire and the property was cordoned off with yellow fire line barricade tape to keep trespassers away.

At 4:20pm a neighbor called and stated that someone crossed the yellow tape and went into the house. An officer then arrived on scene and caught Curley Pitre Sr on the premises. During questioning Pitre admitted that he was stripping wire from the house to sell the copper for extra cash. Pitre was placed under arrest and transported to Eunice PD where he was booked for looting.
