Man arrested for shooting, killing dog

A dog was shot and killed Thursday evening after a Lafayette man arrived home to find the dog in his backyard.

The man, 42-year-old Christopher Cockrell, told police when he found the dog, he armed himself with a shotgun and entered his back yard.

The dog began to growl, bark and advanced toward him, he told police. Cockrell then became afraid and fired one shot, striking and killing the dog, according to police.

Lafayette Police arrested Cockerell on charges of cruelty to animals and illegal use of weapon.

Cockrell is being held in the Lafayette Parish Correctional on a $15,000 bond.

The owner of the dog has not been located.
