GONZALES, La. (AP) - Ascension Parish sheriff's deputies say an eight-months-pregnant woman hit by gunfire was rushed to a hospital where she underwent emergency delivery of her baby and surgical treatment of her bullet wounds.
Deputies tell The Advocate 25-year-old Kenyia Houston, of Gonzales, and her newborn baby are both listed in stable condition.
Authorities say 27-year-old Cowan Collins, of Hammond, who is believed to be the father of Houston's child, was arrested in St. James Parish.
Collins was booked on counts of attempted second-degree murder of Houston, attempted first-degree feticide and illegal use of weapons.
Investigators said they believe Collins used a revolver to shoot Houston twice - once in the arm and once in the chest - at 4:20 a.m. Wednesday outside her home.
It was unclear whether Collins has an attorney.
