The man accused of the Charenton shootings pleaded not guilty Friday in 16th Judicial Court in St. Mary Parish. Wilbert Thibodeaux was in court when the judge signed an order to get Thibodeaux's medical records and ordered a status hearing for Aug. 1.
After the shootings and a brief stay in the Iberia Parish Jail, Wilbert Thibodeaux has since been held in a mental ward at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel. During the status conference, prosecutors can decide whether to seek the death penalty.
The January shootings killed Chitimacha Tribal Sgt. Rick Riggenbach and 79-year-old Eddie Lyons. Lyons' body was found inside a burned mobile home, believed to be set by Thibodeaux. Also, Thibodeaux is accused of shooting and wounding two St. Mary Parish sheriff's deputies.
Despite Louisiana State Police asking three to four more months to complete their crime scene investigation, the judge ordered the report be submitted by May 31.
Thibodeaux is charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of attempted first degree murder and one count of simple arson. He was returned to prison after his arraignment.
