BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A sheriff's spokeswoman says Mall of Louisiana will hire off-duty sheriff's deputies for night patrols. The move comes after two teenagers were shot in the mall's boulevard area in early January.
In the past, Casey Rayborn Hicks tells The Advocate only Dillard's and the nearby Rave Motion Pictures theater had employed deputies for evening security.
Hicks says the mall will hire two more deputies who will patrol the grounds "inside and out" on Saturday evenings.
She says the Rave theater will also hire more deputies for night patrols.
Hicks said the plan was developed after members of the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office met with mall management shortly after the shooting to discuss preventing crime in the area.
