A historic building in downtown St. Martinville will soon be turned into A French international center.

The two story Maison Duchamp was built in 1876 by David Sandoz, as an exact replica of his house in France, for his daughter and her husband.

They failed to pay taxes and the house was later seized and turned into a post office. Today the house is used for receptions. It was severely damaged by Hurricane Gustav one year ago. Since then Fema and the insurance company is providing 200-thousand dollars to restore it to its original glory.

"We'll have many French speaking visitors that are doing research that will be able to come use the downstairs as a resource center and the upstairs as a residence," said Main Street Director, Danielle Fontenette.

Repairs include a new roof, porches, floors and walls. The mayor says the renovations should be complete within the next six months.
