LSU Eunice head baseball coach Jeff Willis was recently named both a Regional Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Willis was named the NJCAA Division II Regional Coach of the Year for the South District before receiving the National Coach of the Year honors at the 2013 ABCA Convention held in Chicago on Jan. 3-6. The Convention saw over 4,500 coaches attend the three and a half day event, with thirty-two of the top baseball people in the world presenting during the clinic sessions.
Willis and the other Coach of the Year recipients were honored at the ABCA Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet, which saw a record attendance.
This is the first time Willis has been named National Coach of the Year by the ABCA.
"LSU Eunice is exceedingly proud of Jeff and his outstanding achievements as a four-time NJCAA Championship coach; but, not any more proud of him than we could be of his extraordinary commitment to and development of outstanding young men and students," LSU Eunice Chancellor Dr. William Nunez III said.
"He is truly a sterling and positive role model for our men's baseball student-athletes to emulate," Dr. Nunez added.
During his 10 year tenure as the Bengal coach he has received seven ABCA Diamond Regional Coach of the Year Awards, seven NJCAA Region 23 Coach of the Year Awards, six NJCAA District Coach of the Year Awards, a Louisville Slugger Coach of the Year Award, and four NJCAA National Coach of the Year Awards.
Willis led the 2012 Bengals to their fourth NJCAA National Championship last spring after compiling a 57-5 overall record. In his 11 seasons at the helm, Willis' LSU Eunice teams have a combined 480-125 record.
Willis and the Bengals open their 2013 season on Feb. 1 with a three-game set against visiting North Lake College.
