The LSU Eunice baseball team's annual Fall World Series kicked off on Friday night, with the Gold team taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series with a commanding 9-1 victory.
A pair of team captains were in the middle of the action, as sophomore Tyler Chapman drove home three RBIs for the Gold team while fellow sophomore Chad Reeves did not factor into the decision despite striking out nine batters after getting the start on the mound for the Black team.
Chapman paced the Gold squad with a 2-for-4 night at the plate with a home run to go with his three RBIs.
Freshman starter Nick Hartman did not factor into the decision after tossing four innings for the Gold team, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out three batters.
Fellow newcomer O.J. Latin earned the win, pitching three hitless innings and striking out three batters.
Freshman reliever Hayden Marze was saddled with the loss for the Black team, allowing six runs and walking five batters despite only allowing one hit in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Reeves struck out nine hitters in his four innings of work, allowing just one hit while walking three and taking the no decision.
Sophomore transfer Bobby Schuman led the Black team at the plate, tallying two hits, including a triple, and scoring the team's lone run.
The teams continue the series tomorrow night at 6 p.m. at Bengal Stadium.
