LSU Welcomes 103 Players to Fall Training Camp

BATON ROUGE - LSU welcomed 103 players to campus Sunday as the Tigers are set to open their 10th training camp under head coach Les Miles on Monday morning.

Sunday served as reporting day for the Tigers as the players went through a series of organizational, academic and team meetings in preparation for the first day of practice on Monday. LSU players were also fitted for equipment as well as undergoing physicals and other screenings with the medical staff.

"I have done this 10 times in a row now," Miles said of his annual reporting day press conference. "It's kind of fun. The call to action over the next 29 days is to improve and get better with each practice.

"(Sunday) is the day that the new class and the varsity come together as we get ready to practice. I'm looking forward to finally getting on the field and going to work."

Miles said two players on the 105-player training camp roster didn't report on Sunday - defensive back Jalen Mills and defensive tackle Trevonte Valentine.

Miles said that he's looking forward to the competition during camp and he expects that a number of freshmen to come in and contribute. LSU has played 29 true freshmen in the past two years.

‘There's the necessity for every guy to improve," Miles said. "There will be competition. We will see this competition as a necessity for having a great year. It will be interesting. You will find that certain guys have great starts, and other guys will have great starts and great finishes. It will be fun to watch. We have a couple drills early on in the practices that are evaluated entirely. So will have some fun and see how the guys perform. They are all interesting to be honest."

The quarterback position is one area that the Tigers will have to count on a sophomore and a true freshman to fill the void left due to the graduation of Zach Mettenberger. Anthony Jennings started one game last year, leading the Tigers to a 21-14 win over Iowa in the Outback Bowl. He will be pressed for playing time by rookie Brandon Harris, who graduated early and joined the Tigers in time for spring practice.

"I haven't put a deadline on deciding a starting quarterback, never have and never will," Miles said. "We will have to see how each to proceed each day and things go."

LSU will have split squad practices for the first four days with the varsity going in the morning followed by the freshmen/newcomers and selected veterans in the afternoon.

LSU opens the 2014 season on Aug. 30 at 8 p.m. CT against 14th-ranked Wisconsin at NRG Stadium in the Advocare Kickoff in Houston, Texas.
