BATON ROUGE - The LSU student architecture journal Contexture: Freshly Cut, led by student editors Kristen Kelsch and Jonathan LeJune, recently won the 2011 Douglas Haskell Award for student architecture journals.

The $1,000 award was given by the Center for Architecture Foundation, which is a New York based nonprofit organization. "I particularly enjoyed seeing that the journal has evolved since we first saw it in 2009," said Haskell Committee Chair Charles Linn. "I remember that it got an honorable mention that year, and I am extremely pleased that some of the comments made in the letter I sent with that announcement may have influenced the current edition. We especially liked the fact that so many students were able to contribute."

The committee called the writing in the journal crisp, and said it avoided using jargon and covered topics that were clearly of interest to the writers. "I hope that young editors are in training already and that they will carry on this proud tradition," Linn said.

"The School of Architecture is extremely proud of our students' contributions to architectural discourse through Contexture," LSU School of Architecture Director Jori Ann Erdman said. "Kristen, Jonathan and all of the student contributors did a remarkable job, and we look forward to the next issue."

The award money will go toward producing the journal's 2011 edition, Contexture: Creole, as well as supporting future issues.

The Center for Architecture Foundation is dedicated to promoting a broader appreciation of the built environment through educational programs and scholarship. Its Douglas Haskell Award was founded to encourage student journalism on architecture, planning and related subjects, and to foster regard for intelligent criticism among future professionals.
