BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - LSU System President John Lombardi is offering a counter-proposal to legislation that would merge LSU's Shreveport campus into Louisiana Tech University and the University of Louisiana System. Instead, Lombardi wants to move Louisiana Tech into the LSU System.

Lombardi pitched the idea Wednesday in Shreveport. He says it would be part of the creation of a new alliance among colleges and technical schools in northwest Louisiana designed to expand academic programs in the region.

At issue is a bill proposed by north Louisiana lawmakers and backed by the state's top higher education board, the Board of Regents, that would make LSU-Shreveport a second campus of Louisiana Tech. The two campuses are 70 miles apart.

The bill will be considered in the upcoming legislative session that begins Monday.
