Both the LSU Eunice baseball and softball teams sit atop the country as both were ranked the top team in the national polls released by the NJCAA today.
The baseball Bengals, 28-3, entered the season as preseason No. 1 and have held the position all season, briefly sharing the top spot with Western Oklahoma State College during the March 13 poll.
In this week's poll, LSU Eunice was the only team in the top 20 to receive votes for the No. 1 position, as Western Oklahoma (No. 2), Des Moines Area Community College (No.3), Catawba Valley Community College (No. 4) and Pearl River Community College (No.5) round out the top spots in the poll.
The baseball team is currently on a 17-game winning streak heading into their matchup tonight against Galveston College, as Brady Domingue leads the country with eight wins and Casey Rodrigue has stolen 32 bases to lead that category. Fellow Bengal Landon Thibodeaux is second in the nation with 29 steals as well.
Domingue also has tallied 58 strikeouts this season, the third-most in the country. Rodrigue, Garrett Deschamp and Stefan Trosclair are all tied for fifth in the country with 28 RBIs.
In the first poll of the season, the Lady Bengal softball team was also the only team to receive first place votes, as they jumped to the top spot after being ranked fourth in the initial, preseason poll back on January 24.
The softball Lady Bengals, 36-4, are currently on a nine-game winning streak and have also gone on a 22-game winning streak this season to set a program-high for consecutive victories.
Kelsey Hollier leads the country with 54 RBIs through Tuesday's games, while her nine home runs have her tied for fifth-most in the country to this point as well.
Pitcher Julienne Broussard has tallied 14 wins on the season and has struck out 97 batters, sitting second in the nation in both categories.
Emily Nolan's 38 RBIs rank fourth in the nation, while Brooke Clark is tied for fifth with 35 RBIs so far. Brooke Thomas' 24 stolen bases are tied for the fourth-most this season as well.
The Lady Bengals are currently off before they travel for a pair of back-to-back road doubleheaders, against Alvin Community College on April 4 and San Jacinto Community College on April 5.
The Bengal baseball team wraps up a two-game set with Galveston College this afternoon at 4 p.m. before making the short trip to Baton Rouge Community College tomorrow night. The two teams will then play at LSU Eunice on Friday night before finishing their series in Baton Rouge on Saturday afternoon.
