The LSU Eunice softball team captured its fourth-consecutive Region 23 Championship with a 6-1, rain-shortened, four inning victory over Jones County Junior College, as LSU Eunice now will advance to play in next week's NJCAA National Championship Tournament next week.
The No. 1-ranked Lady Bengals (58-2), who had already clinched their national tournament bid on Thursday, scored in three of the four innings in a game that began in the Mississippi heat before pouring rain that eventually ended the game early.
"How exciting is it that we won another regional championship? It was one of our goals and we accomplished it. The bats really stepped up. Our pitchers made the two-out pitches and we got the two-out hits we needed," head coach Andy Lee said.
Taylor Boulet and Brooklynn Clark each finished with two hits and an RBI, while Ashley Subervielle also collected two hits. Emily Nolan's lone hit was a two-run homer, while Destin Vicknair (RBI) and Codi Covington each tallied a hit as well.
Vicknair earned her 26th victory of the season, allowing four hits, one run and two walks while striking out five strikeouts in the four innings.
The Lady Bengals plated the opening run of the afternoon with Vicknair'ssacrifie fly to bring home Boulet before adding three runs in the second inning on Boulet's infield single and a sacrifice fly from Clark, while Covington came home on a passed ball to push the lead to 4-0.
Jones County plated their lone run in the top of the third frame when they strung together back-to-back hits and scored on an RBI single.
The final blow of the weekend came in the top of the fourth when Nolan sent a two-run homer through the pouring rain and over the right field wall.
LSU Eunice now prepares for their NJCAA National Tournament opening round game on Wednesday against an opponent to be determined.
