A night after posting double-digit hits and runs, the LSU Eunice baseball team received its' second consecutive strong start from freshman Gerry Gonzales as they swept the series with Galveston College with a 5-3 win Wednesday afternoon.
Gonzales finished with his second win of the season for the Bengals (29-3) after eight innings pitched, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) and striking out four batters.
The performance comes on the heels of his first start seven days ago when he tossed 8 2/3 innings and struck out 15 batters.
"I think the difference was our starting pitching getting us deep into the game. Gerry getting us deep into the game and saved our bullpen," head coach Jeff Willis said.
On Wednesday, Landon Thibodeaux and Dalton DeLeon each notched two hits to help pace the offense, as Stefan Trosclair, Garrett Deschamp, Buddy McCoy and Ray Veit each tallied a hit each.
McCoy, Veit and DeLeon drove in the three RBIs for the Bengals, with McCoy's go-ahead, solo homer to lead off the bottom of the eighth the only extra-base hit for the hosts.
After seeing Galveston (23-17) take the lead with a run in the top of the fourth, LSU Eunice took the lead in the bottom of the frame with two hits and the help of two errors from the visitors.
Thibodeaux and Veit both reached base with one out in the fourth, Thibodeaux scored to tie the game on a Galveston error as he stole third base before Veit came home on DeLeon's RBI single up the middle.
Galveston tied the game in the top of the fifth before the Bengals re-took the lead in the sixth thanks to Veit's RBI single to score Thibodeaux, who singled earlier in the inning.
After the visitors tied the game at three in the top of the seventh, McCoy sent his second home run of the season over the left field wall to lead off the eighth and give the Bengals the lead for good. They would tack on one final run later in the inning via a wild pitch to give the game its' final score.
The Bengals now ready for a three-game set against Baton Rouge Community College beginning tomorrow night. LSU Eunice will travel to Baton Rouge for a 6 p.m. first pitch in game one before hosting game two Friday night and wrapping up the series back in Baton Rouge on Saturday afternoon.
Tomorrow night's game can be seen on Bengal All-Access and heard over the airwaves on KVPI 92.5 FM.
