Louisiana State University Eunice was recognized in the February issue of NJCAA Review, a national magazine for universities in the National Junior College Athletic Association.
In an article entitled, Champions for the Community: Advocates for Education, LSU Eunice was one of sixteen colleges and universities recognized for their efforts to inspire and encourage younger generations about the importance of academics.
The university's Book Buddy program was highlighted in the article. LSU Eunice faculty, staff, and students participate in the program by being partnered with a pre-kindergarten through third grade student in the Eunice's local schools. The book buddy spends 30 minutes a week in one-on-one reading sessions with the child and helps to encourage that child to develop reading skills and to recognize the importance of reading.
Over 75 student athletes in baseball, softball and basketball at LSU Eunice participate in the Book Buddy program. Last year, the NJCAA officially recognized LSUE's softball and basketball program as All-Academic teams. NJCAA teams with top grade point average in each sport are recognized as Academic Teams of the Year.
LSU Eunice's Book Buddy program has been recognized by the Corporation for National and Community Service and placed on the President' Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service to America's communities.
The program has been active on the LSU Eunice campus and Eunice community for 17 years.
