The LSU Eunice baseball team baseball team wrapped up its' 2013 home schedule with a 9-2 win over visiting Panola College on Sunday afternoon to sweep the three-game series.
Bengal starter Zac Person struck out 11 batters in six innings of work, while Adam Angelle, Landon Thibodeaux and Dalton DeLeon each finished with three hits to pace the offense.
Casey Rodrigue (1-3, 2 BB) and Thibodeaux each notched three RBIs, as Derek Herrington added two hits, and Buddy McCoy (1-4) drove home two RBIs.
"I thought our hitters were really clutch today. We had a lot of two-out situations where our guys got hits to drive in runs," head coach Jeff Willis said.
The Bengals (45-8) never trailed, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on Thibodeaux's two-run double before adding single runs in the fourth and fifth before a four-run sixth inning and a final run in the bottom of the eighth.
Panola (27-24) scored single runs in the seventh and eighth.
Person improved to 8-0 on the year, allowing just four hits and no runs over his six innings, walking six batters, but was able to escape several jams - including stranding the bases loaded in the first and fourth innings.
"Zac made some big pitches with those guys getting in scoring position to get himself out of those different jams and trouble," Wills said.
In the fifth, Person allowed back-to-back singles to open the frame before LSU Eunice turned a triple play, striking out the batter and throwing out the lead runner trying to steal third and also gunning down the trailing runner looking to sneak into second base.
Immediately following the triple play, McCoy blasted a solo shot to deep left-center field to extend the lead to four before the sixth inning was highlighted by Rodrigue's two-run double, an RBI single from Angelle and a run-scoring double from Thibodeaux.
Angelle led off the eighth with a standup double before McCoy's sacrifice fly plated the final run of the afternoon.
Gerry Gonzales (1 inning, 2 hits, 1 run), Kirk Savoy (1 inning, 1 hit, 1 run, 1 strikeout) and Jevin Huval (1 inning, 1 strikeout) closed out the final three innings in relief.
The Bengals hit the road next Friday and Saturday to conclude their 2013 regular season, squaring off against NCAA opponent Southern University on Friday night at 6 p.m. before a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
"We'll get our pitchers some work, but we are also going to limit pitch counts, and make sure we get some guys into the game to get some work and make sure we are fresh and ready to go once the regional starts," Willis said.
