Louisiana State Police had an increased number of troopers on patrol this Labor Day holiday. This extra allocation in manpower was due to overtime availability made possible by federal grants via the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
Louisiana State Police investigated zero fatality crashes this Labor Day weekend. Last year, there were twelve people killed on Louisiana roadways. Five of those were alcohol-related.
However, troopers did arrest 177 drivers for DWI during the "No Refusal Weekend" across the state. Those drivers were arrested as a direct result of the implementation of DWI checkpoints, saturation patrols and "No Refusal Weekends." Only sixteen (16) refused to submit to chemical testing, but search warrants were obtained for twelve (12) of the sixteen (16). (NOTE: not all parishes participated in the "No Refusal Weekend" campaign.)
