A surprising vote by the Lafayette Parish School Board leaves the budget for the next fiscal year still up in the air.

By a vote of 4-5, the board rejected the administration's proposed budget for the 2012-2013 school year.

For board members, there was a break in ranks, with the so-called "gang of five." Board member Tehmi Chassion voted against the budget, citing a line item which would allocate funds from the "2002 Teacher Tax" to pay for the salaries of three assistant principals.

Also at Tuesday's meeting, the board voted in favor of changes to the David Thibodaux Career and Technical High School. The board voted to convert the school to a grades 6-12 STEM Magnet School.

As for the budget, the board is expected to cal a special meeting for next week.
