A tragedy in the ranks at the Lafayette Police Department. The department is in mourning, after one of their own was killed over the weekend in a boating accident. The incident is still under investigation, but Corporal Joel Grayson was killed while out boating on Lake Maurepas, in Livingston Parish.
At the time of the accident he was off duty. It all happened just after 5 o'clock yesterday. According to the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, 29-year-old Grayson jumped into the water to get his boat's anchor, after a passing boat sliced the line.
In doing so, Grayson was injured by his boat's propeller.
At this point, investigators do not suspect foul play, and they add, alcohol did not play a factor.
He was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales where he later passed away.
The Lafayette Police Department releasing a statement, sending condolences to Grayson's family. They told us Corporal Grayson was assigned as a member of the LPD's crime suppression unit and on the LPD S.W.A.T team. He was a recipient of the Lafayette Police Department's most prestigious honor------the Medal of Valor.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
