The Lafayette Police Department gets a 60 day extension for the internal affairs investigation against 15 officers. The officers filed a federal suit against the city and the department last week. Internal Affairs is investigating the leak of confidential documents. Monday, Police Chief Jim Craft asked for an extension citing delays with the recent lawsuits filed by several of the officers being investigated.
IA is trying to determine whether the officers leaked documents to an attorney who was representing a fellow officer. Officer Scott Poeincot of the Fire and Police Civil Service Board is involved in both the IA investigation and two lawsuits. He abstained from voting on the Chief's request because of his involvement in the investigations.
