BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana Highway Safety Commission says traffic deaths last year dropped to the lowest levels since 1984. The commission said Tuesday that 824 people were killed and 73,856 were injured in crashes in 2009. Last year was the second consecutive year that deaths and injuries declined on Louisiana's roads. Last year's fatalities dropped 9.9 percent from the previous year's count of 915. Injuries dropped 2.6 percent from the 2008 total of 75,900.
Louisiana's highway deaths hit a 25-year high of 993 in 2007.
