GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A 73-year-old Louisiana man has been sentenced to 20 years for manslaughter in the fatal shooting of 42-year-old Sonya Nelson of Gulfport on July 13, 2009.
A Harrison County jury deliberated about five hours Thursday and was unable to reach a verdict on an indicted charge of murder in the slaying.
The Sun Herald reports the judge suspended 10 years, leaving 10 to serve.
Nelson, from Alexandria, La., had rented a room in Slagle's home.
Assistant District Attorney Chris Fisher says Nelson was running a ceiling fan and Slagle was upset about the cost of electricity. The jury heard testimony that the two of them struggled over a gun. Two shots were fired. One struck her in the stomach.
