LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - State District Judge Mike Canaday
ordered Judge Wilford Carter removed from attempted murder cases pending against four men accused of shooting at a police lieutenant whom Carter has publicly criticized.
Canaday's ruling came Wednesday during a hearing at which Lake Charles Police Lt. Arnold Bellow testified. The cases have been reassigned to another judge.
The District Attorney's Office asked Carter to step down from the cases, which were randomly assigned to him. Prosecutors claimed he couldn't be fair and impartial.
Canaday said the state had shown that Carter was personally interested in the cause to such an extent that he would be unable to conduct a fair and impartial trial.
The American Press reports the defendants are accused in a Sept. 2, 2009, shooting that targeted Bellow.
