CHOUDRANT, La. - The Ragin' Cajuns golf team carded a score of 16-over par (304) on a frigid Monday to finish in fifth after the first round of the Argent Financial Classic held at Squire Creek Country Club.
"It's hard to really judge how we competed with the way the weather was today," head coach Theo Sliman said. "I'm really proud of the way our guys showed their mental toughness. We have a great opportunity tomorrow to finish in the top 3. We just need to continue the process of learning and applying."
Sophomore Haraldur Magnus and Christian Verrougstraete find themselves in the top 10 through 18 holes in a tie for ninth at 2-over (74). Magnus parred 15 of 18 holes on the day.
"I'm really impressed with Haraldur's confidence today on the greens," Sliman commented. "He and Christian both showed some tremendous consistency despite the adverse weather conditions today."
Host Louisiana Tech leads the field with a team score of 5-over (293). North Texas (+6, 294), Southeastern Louisiana (+9, 297), ULM (+14, 302) and Louisiana (+16, 304) round out the top 5 squads.
Pep Angles of Central Arkansas and Calum Hill of ULM are tied for the individual lead at 2-under (70) as they are two of only three golfers to post scores under par on the day.
Thomas Strandemo and Ross Davis find themselves just outside of the top 25 in a tie for 28th at 6-over (78), while Fernando Cruz Valle finished in a tie for 45th at 8-over (80).
The Cajuns are paired with the Warhawks and Texas State for the final round tomorrow starting at 10 a.m. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
