DENTON, Texas - The Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team dropped a 71-59 decision to Sun Belt Conference foe North Texas on Saturday night at The Super Pit in Denton, Texas. With the loss, Louisiana falls to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in SBC play, while the Mean Green improve to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in league action.
"I felt like we played really indecisive and that's from being young," said head coach Garry Brodhead. "Their press gave us some trouble and made us play faster and a little bit out of our rhythm. We had significantly less turnovers than the game against Middle Tennessee, now we just need to make better decisions once we break it. It's going to take time but we'll get back in the gym to work on it."
With the game locked at 15-15 after twelve minutes of action, the Mean Green used an 11-0 run to take a 26-15 lead. The Ragin' Cajuns came storming back with an 11-0 run of their own to tie the game at 26-26. Sylvana Okde hit a pair of free throws before Keke Veal scored a layup and converted a free throw to spark the Louisiana run. The Mean Green scored two quick layups and Ashley Benjamin hit a layup as time expired as North Texas took a 30-28 halftime lead.
Laura McCoy knocked down a three-pointer to open the second half, which sparked a 17-8 run by the Mean Green. Veal hit a layup to bring the Cajuns back to within single digits, 47-39 at the 11:45 mark. McCoy hit another big trey less than thirty seconds later as North Texas went on another 6-0 run to take a 53-39 advantage.
The Ragin' Cajuns fought back as Okde hit a pair of three-pointers to spark a 10-2 Louisiana run. The Cajuns trailed 57-51 with 5:57 remaining however North Texas seemed to make all the key shots down the stretch to run away with a 71-59 victory.
Three Ragin' Cajuns scored in double figures with junior Ashley Benjamin leading the way with 12 points. Byronesha Santiago nearly posted another double-double, scoring ten points and grabbing eight rebounds in only 12 minutes of action. Sylvana Okde contributed 10 points on the night, as she has now scored in double-figures in five of seven contests this season.
The Ragin' Cajuns shot 24-of-67 (35.8 percent) from the floor, while North Texas shot 28-of-51 (54.9 percent) from the field. From the free throw line, Louisiana converted 8-of-11, and the Mean Green went 11-of-12. Louisiana hit 3-15 shots from three-point range, while NT was 4-of-12 from beyond the arc.
