Victoria Panelli, M.D., a local Medical Oncology and Hematology Specialist and Associate Medical Director of Hospice Compassus - Lafayette, recently achieved the gold standard credentials in hospice and palliative care, earning a sub-specialty certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine from the American Board of Medical Specialties.
"I am dedicated to providing superior hospice and palliative care for my patients," said Dr. Panelli. "As the demand for and utilization of hospice care continues to grow, it is increasingly important for physicians to practice accurately and competently by achieving the highest level of specialized training available. Our patients and their families expect and deserve the highest standards of care, and by achieving this certification, I am helping to further distinguish our program from all others."
Dr. Panelli, a graduate of Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, Puerto Rico, specializes in Medical Oncology, Hematology and Hospice Care. She completed her residency at Tulane University Medical Center and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. Currently, Dr. Panelli practices at the Cancer Center of Acadiana at Lafayette General and serves as Associate Medical Director for Hospice Compassus - Lafayette. She is also a member of the U.S. Army Reserve.
Dr. Panelli's Hospice and Palliative Medicine certification represents Hospice Compassus's successful initiative to encourage all of its physicians to become sub-specialty board certified.
Working together, the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) and the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ABHPM) achieved recognition for the sub-specialty of Hospice and Palliative Medicine in 2006 by the ABMS. The AAHPM is the professional organization for physicians specializing in hospice and palliative medicine and is dedicated to expanding access to high-quality palliative care.
