Acadiana law enforcement officials say they have been inundated with calls of service this morning, including calls to recover drivers and cars from crashes.
According to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office, it responded to 10 crashes between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. today. The Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office says it has worked 15 crashes caused by black ice since last night. Other agencies, including Louisiana State Police, have also seen an increase in the volume of calls that they have received because of the icy road conditions.
Officials are urging drivers to stay put and not get on local roadways until the ice covering those roads melts. They say although roads may not be closed, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are safe to traverse.
