Livingston schools end fiscal year with surplus

The Livingston Parish School Board has unanimously approved its finalized budget for 2012-13, which projects a current-year surplus of about $369,000.
On Tuesday, the school board also approved an updated salary schedule for teachers based on new laws passed during the 2012 legislative session.
The law dictates salary schedules for public school teachers based on effectiveness, demand and experience, as well as dictating minimum requirements for teacher tenure, or job protection.
It was one of two key pieces of education legislation pushed by Gov. Bobby Jindal and passed in the 2012 session. It has been challenged in court.
Superintendent John Watson has said the school system is operating as if law will hold up in court.
