On Tuesday at 07:23 am, Duson Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to an investigation of smoke in the 8900 block of Cameron Street, Chevron gas well site. Upon arrival, department officials observed a 90 barrel tank battery (Storage tank used in the production of oil at well sites) on fire. Lafayette Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Response Team (LFDHMRT) was requested to assist.
LFDHMRT utilized specialized foam to bring the fire under control and assist in extinguishment.
Air monitoring was preformed by LFDHMRT members throughout the incident. There were no threatening life safety issues, therefore no evacuations were ordered.
An investigation revealed that a direct lightning strike to the facility initiated the fire in the tanks which contained oil and distalant.
There were no injuries. An environmental clean-up team was called out to remove the remaining product left from the fire assuring no environmental impact.
