DENHAM SPRINGS, La. (AP) - Investigators suspect a lightning strike may have triggered an oil tank explosion that led to the evacuation of roughly 30 homes in a rural area outside Baton Rouge.
Livingston Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness director Mark Harrell says the cause of the blast remained under investigation Friday by the state fire marshal's office. But he says residents of the neighborhood near Denham Springs saw lightning just before the explosion late Thursday at a storage facility.
No injuries were reported.
The fire consumed two tanks containing about 2,300 barrels of oil and was still burning Friday afternoon. Harrell said it was contained to a 125-square-foot area and wasn't a threat to spread to nearby homes.
Plano, Texas-based Denbury Resources Inc. owns the facility where the tanks are located.
