LDWF seeks volunteers for crab trap cleanup

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is seeking volunteers to help with its crab trap clean-up project in Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes.

The department partnered with Louisiana Sea Grant, the Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana and other volunteer groups to remove and dispose of more than 22,000 abandoned crab traps since the program began in 2004.

Officials say removing the traps helps improve waterway safety and navigation.

The Plaquemines Parish clean-up will begin Saturday at 6 a.m. and end Feb. 25 at 6 a.m. Volunteer days are this Saturday and next Saturday, Feb. 23, at Beshel's Marina in East Pointe-a-La Hache.

The St. Bernard Parish clean-up will be March 9 and end March 18. A volunteer clean-up day will be March 9 at Breton Sound Marina in Hopedale.
