After months of discussion, the LCG council approved a 30-day amnesty period for late fees and penalties associated with violations under the Redflex traffic camera program.
Then the government will begin taking violators to court.
The amnesty period does not apply to base fines, but instead to any late fees or additional penalties that have amassed since the initial violation. Once the amnesty ends, City Attorney Michael Hebert will begin preparing the files of unpaid violators for court, starting with the largest offenders and going down to any fines of $125 or more.
The smaller fines will be bundled together and issued to contracting attorneys. Only when the fines are collected will the attorneys earn a one-third fee for their services.
Hebert said the larger cases will be handled in a similar fashion as well.
The council voted 7-2 in favor of the amnesty plan. Councilmen William Theriot and Jared Bellard voted against the ordinance
