BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - New Orleans Democrats are criticizing the state's handling of a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant program to elevate houses that are vulnerable to hurricanes.
Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, who chairs the Select Committee on Hurricane Recovery, will discuss the program in a special meeting of the committee Thursday.
Peterson, along with Sens. Edwin R. Murray and Cynthia Willard-Lewis, told the chamber earlier this week that the program has been restructured several times.
The changes have decreased the number of eligible homeowners, and the state has known since November that the majority of applicants are no longer eligible, said the senators.
The committee will hear testimony from the Shaw Group, the contractor administering the program, as well as the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.
