Lawmakers OK expansion of alcohol sales at movies

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Want a beer with your popcorn?

A proposal to expand the number of movie theaters in Louisiana that could serve alcohol has squeaked to final passage, with a narrow vote of the state House.

Lawmakers voted 53-44 for the idea, giving it the minimum support needed for final passage. The bill by New Orleans Sen. J.P. Morrell moves to the governor for consideration.

A handful of theaters already have special exemptions to serve alcohol. The bill allows any theater to seek a liquor permit from the Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control, if they sell the drinks in a separate area from general concessions.

Opponents said they worried about unruly, drunken theater-goers and the possibility of kids sneaking a drink.
