BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Candidates who aren't affiliated with a political party will be listed as `independent' on Louisiana ballots beginning in 2012.
Lawmakers agreed to the change in a series of technical election code adjustments given final passage with a 26-9 Senate vote on Monday.
Currently, candidates without a political party affiliation are listed as "no party" on the ballot.
Several Republican lawmakers objected to the bid to change the ballot listing, but they couldn't gather enough votes to strip the language from the election bill. GOP Gov. Bobby Jindal hasn't yet taken a position on the proposal.
