St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert is alerting citizens to a phone scam from phone number 855-204-0120.
The caller claims he is with the Bureau of Crime Investigations and that the victim owed money from a loan financed by a local bank. When the victim attempted to explain that it was a misunderstanding, the caller began to make threats against her and her job. The caller also claimed that he had the victim's social security number and other personal information. The public should be aware that this is a scam. There is no such agency as the Bureau of Crime Investigations that would call to collect on a loan.
In addition to the above complaint, the SMPSO also received some reports this afternoon of another common type of telephone scam. The caller stated that the victim had won a sweepstakes prize but must first purchase money cards to claim it. Again, it is a scam.
These types of incidents should be reported to your local law enforcement agency and may also be reported to the National White Collar Crime Center and FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, www.ic3.gov. This website also provides information regarding the many types of internet and telephone scams.
