The search continues for an accused killer on the loose in St. Martinville. He is considered dangerous.
At approximately 10:30 this morning, while correctional officers escorted inmates to the rooftop recreational area, two inmates physically overpowered a deputy and jumped from the roof to the ground. The deputy is said to be suffering from minor injuries.
One inmate was seriously injured and recaptured immediately.
The other inmate, identified as Paul Collins Jr., 36, fled in his orange prison jumpsuit. He may have removed it and may now be wearing a white t-shirt and gray sweatpants.
Collins was in jail for raping and killing his estranged wife Brandi Collins Batiste. She was shot to death in a field behind Cypress Garden Apartments in St. Martinville back in July.
He was eventually tracked down after the murder and pulled from a cane field. He was being held on a 1st degree murder charge, when he escaped today.
It is uncertain as to whether or not he sustained injuries during the fall.
He is 6'3, 200 lbs., clean shaven and bald.
If anyone has any information as to the whereabouts of Collins they are asked to contact 911 immediately.
