Congressman Jeff Landry is continuing his call to terminate the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender minor at UL Lafayette, saying he is willing to assist in the removal.
UL President, Dr. Joseph Savoie, sent a letter to Landry nearly a month ago. He responded to Landry's repeated claim that the university should be focusing all resources on programs that better prepare students for jobs.
In Savoie's letter to Landry he said, "Universities support student learning and produce new knowledge, educated leaders, informed citizens and expert professional skills and training. These universities functions are essential contributions to a free society."
Landry called Savoie's response an "attempt to turn the program into a political soap box." Landry now pleads for UL to end the LGBT minor.
In response Landry sent a letter to Savoie saying, "Please do not assign scarce assets meant for 15,000 students, on a minor that serves 5 people and offers nothing for direct employment prospects. I hope the university will put our people over politics.
KATC reached out to both Landry and Dr. Savoie who were both unavailable for further comment.
