NEW ORLEANS (AP) - U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu is criticizing the White House for submitting a Coast Guard budget for 2013 that she says is more than 3 percent smaller than what the search and rescue agency now has.

The White House has requested $8.4 billion for the Coast Guard for 2013.

At a hearing of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, which Landrieu oversees, the Louisiana Democratic senator said Wednesday that the Coast Guard's funding was inadequate.

Landrieu said the budget request cuts funding for new Coast Guard cutters and hurts the agency's ability to stop drug traffickers.

She also said the Coast Guard needs more money to get better at polar icebreaking to help open up the arctic to oil and natural gas drilling, shipping and fishing.
