NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A former landlord from Metairie has been
charged with illegally receiving housing subsidies.
Federal prosecutors say the Jefferson Parish Housing Authority
assigned 71-year-old Jefferson Thompson a tenant whose rent was
federally subsidized. A contract barred him from receiving any
other government funds to pay for the tenant's rent, but Thompson
allegedly secured funds from the Federal Emergency Management
Agency in addition to the money paid by the housing authority.
A court filing Friday claims Thompson illegally received nearly
$14,000.
The charge against him - theft of government funds - carries a
maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
