The New Iberia owner of a landfill closed in 2009 has agreed to pay $73,904 and at least $150,000 for environmental cleanup work as part of a pending settlement with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.
DEQ and Gordon's Disposal, owned by businessman Gordon Doerle, have agreed to the settlement terms but the deal has yet to be formalized.
The Advocate reports the pending deal resolves a list of alleged violations at the landfill and an on-site waste transfer station dating back to 2004.
The construction and demolition debris landfill is on the border of Iberia and St. Martin parishes. Residents have fought the facility since it opened in 1994. DEQ closed it in 2009 after denying an expansion sought for the site.
