Lake Charles Man Arrested for Fourth DWI

On the morning of September 12, 2013, Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to several calls from motorists reporting a reckless driver traveling west on Interstate Highway 10 between Iowa and Lake Charles. Troopers located the vehicle and observed traffic violations including nearly hitting the vehicle ahead. The driver, 39-year-old John A. Hernandez of Lake Charles, was stopped on I-10 in Lake Charles.

Upon contact with Troopers, Hernandez exhibited signs of impairment. Hernandez performed poorly on a standardized field sobriety test and was arrested and transported to Troop D for further testing.

Additional investigation revealed Hernandez consumed impairment-inducing narcotics prior to getting behind the wheel. A urine sample was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Records indicate Hernandez was arrested for vehicular homicide in 2006. He was subsequently arrested for DWI twice in 2011.

Hernandez was charged with DWI fourth offense, speeding (70 in a 60 mph zone), and following too closely. He was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center.
Motorists are reminded that impairment caused by narcotics, whether prescribed or not, can have the same legal consequences as impairment caused by alcohol. Drive sober or get pulled over.

To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to dial *LSP (*577) from their cellular phone or to contact their local law enforcement agency.
