MATHEWS, La. (AP) - The Lafourche Parish Council has decided to hold off on hiring an internal auditor to oversee parish government's finances and spending.

The Courier reports a search committee comprised of three council members recommended three finalists.

Some council members have questioned the need for a fulltime auditor and have said the position could be used as a political tool against Parish President Charlotte Randolph.

One of the finalists is former Parish Council member Tommy Lasseigne, who ran against Randolph for the parish president's job in 2007 and 2011.

The council voted 5-4 Tuesday night to suspend the search indefinitely.
