Lafourche Parish is spending more than $10 million to upgrade, replace and build new pump stations to increase flood protection.
Projects that residents should expect to be completed within the next year include a new pump station just outside Lockport and the rebuilding of three pump stations near Bayou Blue and Gheens.
The pump stations play a significant role in flood prevention for parish residents.
While the parish is allocating money for the projects, Public Works Director Don Edwards says most of the cost is being paid for through state and federal grants.
The parish replaces pumps that become old, inefficient and too costly to maintain.
